How to Speed Up Physical Recovery Following an Accident

Motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall accidents, and work accidents all have one thing in common; they cause physical injuries that take time to heal. There are many factors that determine how quickly you may heal. Your age, overall health, and the severity of the injury are just some of these. While you can’t control every factor, there are some things you can do to help speed up recovery as much as possible.

1. Undergo a thorough medical evaluation. This can help your physician determine the true extent of your injuries. This information can help them identify the most effective therapies, surgical procedures, etc., which can be used to create a long-term treatment plan.

2. Complete all recommended medical treatments. Whether it is a surgical procedure or physical therapy regimen, it is important to complete all recommended treatments.

3. Trade “bad” habits for “healthy” habits. Smoking, drinking, and other habits can weaken your immune, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems and delay healing. The more you can ease pressure on these critical systems, the faster your body can heal.

4. Eat healthy and get plenty of rest. A healthy diet gives your body the nutrients it needs to heal. Diets high in protein, vitamins, and minerals can help bones, nerves, and organs repair themselves. Likewise, get plenty of sleep. Your body uses this time to recover from the stresses placed on your body during the day.

5. Take care of your mental health. Physical injuries cause considerable mental stress. Speaking with a licensed counselor can help you process the psychological trauma of the accident. Many people are resistant to seek mental health care. However, attending counseling can help your mind process the effect of the injury on your life, career, and relationships. In turn, this reduces stress, which helps your body heal.

6. Take it slow. Don’t rush your recovery. Give your body time to recover gradually. Trying to expedite your recovery by overexerting muscles, bones, organs, joints, etc., can exacerbate your injuries and lead to secondary injuries that can prolong the recovery process.
